Our application link is now open, and we welcome your students to apply for exchange studies during the academic year 2014/2015 at the Institute of Technology, Linköping University. We need to emphasize that we can only admit the number of students agreed upon in our agreements this year, and ask for your understanding in this matter. We regret that it is not possible for us to accept any additional students this year.

When applying for admission, the application form must be accompanied by a signed and stamped application form and a transcript of records (the courses including marks you have taken at your university). Applications without correct documentation and applications which arrive after deadline will not be processed.

The students can apply for housing (student room) in the on-line application. Another possibility is to apply via www.studentbostader.se (the web site available in English). We recommend that both possibilities are explored.
All the information the students need in order to provide a complete application is found in the link below. Please ask your students to read the information carefully, only to choose courses taught in English, to verify that there are no scheduling conflicts between the selected courses, and not to select any courses on Advanced (A) level unless the students are studying on master level:

Universiteit in Linköping is zeer goed in orde, lessen zijn over het algemeen in verstaanbaar engels gegeven en de docenten zijn van een degelijk niveau (wederom over het algemeen). De hoorcolleges zijn in de universiteit stijl, in grotere autditoria met geen verplichte aanwezigheid. Labo's brengen een wat zwaardere workload met zich mee, geen verplichte aanwezigheden op de labo's maar wel met deadlines die te halen zijn en voor sommige vakken wel wat werk vereisen. Slagen op deze labo's is over het algemeen wel een vereiste om te kunnen slagen op een vak. De docenten zowel voor labo's als voor lessen zijn zeer bereid tot het geven van extra informatie en labo's kunnen een tweede maal worden ingedient indien de eerste versie niet toereikend was.

Housing
Probeer er zeker van te zijn dat de universiteit voor je accomodatie zorgt, zo moet je je nergens zorgen over maken en kan je onmiddellijk je kot in als je aankomt in Linköping. Indien dit niet het geval is zorg er dan voor dat je al wat connecties hebt gelegd om een kot te vinden anders kom je op een eindeloze wachtlijst, en kan het soms maanden duren vooraleer je een vast kot hebt gevonden. Hou hier dus rekening mee. Verder is de accomodatie meer dan in orde. Grote kamers met eigen douche en wc, en een keuken voor 8 personen. Koten van de universiteit zijn gelegen in Ryd (waar alle studenten meestal gehuisvest zijn) indien je dus geen kot van de universiteit hebt gekregen probeer zeker daar een te vinden dit bevoordeeld je studentenleven een heel pak.
Via het notice board van de universiteit ( https://www.student.liu.se/studenttjanster/anslagstavlan?l=en) en via studentbostader (https://www.studentbostader.se/en) kun je op zoek gaan naar een kot.
Veel advertenties op het notice board zijn in het Zweeds opgesteld, maar je kunt natuurlijk in het Engels antwoorden.
Bij studentbostader moet je je inschrijven om iedere dag 1 extra "queuing point" te krijgen. De personen met de meeste punten krijgen voorrang. Dus je kunt best al minstens een half jaar voor je erasmus ingeschreven staan op de site...
De 2 studentenbuurten zijn Flamman en Ryd.
Travel and travelling around
To/from your host country
I took the plane in Zaventem to Stockholm Bromma, in Stockholm I took 'Flygbusserna' (airport coach) to the station. After that I took the train to Linköping. In Linköping you can easily get around by taking the bus (make sure you buy a busscard at a pressbyrå, you can't pay cash on the bus).
One can also fly to Stockholm Arlanda or Stockholm Skavsta, from there you can take 'Flygbusserna' directly to Linköping.

In the host town and country
Voor de bezienwaardigheden kan je dan trips maken naar Stockholm, Göteborg, Oslo, Kopenhagen, ... (indien mogelijk zeker eens naar Kiruna gaan).
Social life
Food / drinks and going out
For food you can buy your own ingredients in Hemköp (Ryd Center) and cook your own meals. There are also some take-away restaurants in Ryd Center itself (Chineese, Pizza ...). In Linköping Centrum you can find many restaurants of different taste.
Voor bezienswaardigheden is Linköping geen super stad, maar voor het studentenleven is het zeker ideaal, feestmogelijkheden in Ryd (op 50m van de meeste koten) en in het centrum (3km van Ryd) zijn voldoende aanwezig en zijn meestal vol met erasmus en lokale mensen.
Note that you cannot find (strong) alcohol in the regular stores, but only in a 'Systembolaget'. You can find one in the center of Linköping and one near the IKEA (Both reachable by taking one bus from Ryd Centrum).
Money / banking
You are not allowed to open a bank account in Sweden, but there are ATM's all over the city where you can withdraw cash or you can pay using a credit card (you might get charged more).
Many organisations (hotels / hostels /...) require you to have visa in order for you to book.
In quasi iedere Zweedse winkel, zaak of restaurant kun je met je betaalkaart betalen.
Phone and internet, ways to communicate
Internet is quite cheap for students. In 2011 - 2012 we paid 50 SEK for internet with 10 mbit upload 10 mbit download / no limit.
You can also get the 100 mbit up/down for 150 SEK (I think).
Bij inschrijving aan de universiteit van Linköping krijg je een Zweedse simkaart. Deze kun je "opladen" in een krantenwinkel om op deze manier redelijk voordelig te bellen, sms'en en 3G te gebruiken in Zweden.
In de koten van Studentbostader zit internet inbegrepen in de huurprijs. Hiervoor hoef je niks extra te betalen of aan te vragen.
How to improve your integration?
I would realy recommend taking the Intensive Swedish Course in August. Yes, you lose half your vacation, but you will gain so much from it! After all, erasmus is part vacation aswell. You will be able to speak with Swedish collegues in swedish, which is somthing they realy appreciate. You will be able to find your way faster then by taking the course during the year, and you will have more time available for yourself during your other courses.
Ook als je in het tweede semester op erasmus gaat, is de intensieve Zweedse cursus aangeraden (intensive beginner's course in Swedish for Exchange students-Level A1). Deze cursus duurt 3 weken en je leert er buiten Zweeds ook over typische Zweedse gewoontes en je ontmoet er andere internationale studenten.
In het tweede semester start de intensieve taalcursus rond 8 januari.

Intercultural differences with your home country
Northern people often suck in air instead of saying 'yes', this can lead to weird conversations.
People often talk on the phone via an earpiece, you can't see they're talking on the phone in the beginning, but you'll get used to it.
Swedish people often take 'Snus', this is tobacco in a bag that they put under their lip. It is accepted everywhere, even in schools during exams.
Things to see, to visit, to do, excursions
Interessante plaatsen om te bezoeken/naartoe te reizen zijn Lund, Malmö, Stockholm en Göteborg...
De erasmusstudentenverenigingen, ISA en ESN, bieden vaak reizen voor studenten aan aan redelijk voordelige prijzen. Deze reizen zijn zeker de moeite waard!

Budget
Zweden is een duur land, ook al let je op je geld zal je toch meer uitgeven dan je in Leuven gewoon bent. Deze erasmus heeft mij toch in totaal een kleine 5000 euro gekost, iets om dus zeker in het achterhoofd te houden.
Most of that money is spend on public transport and alcohol (the price is about triple the price in Belgium, for both categories).
I spend aproximately 1800 euro on housing, and an average of 70 euro per two weeks.
This is without alcohol, each individual spends a different amount on alcohol. To get a good view on what you will spend on it, take the amount you spend on alcohol here, tripple/quadripple it and there you go.
Then I made some trips to Stockholm, Uppsala, ... Each trip priced off at aproximately 120 euro in addition to my 'two-weekly' budget. Making trips is expensive and sometimes hard to arrange, but they were all sure worth it!
Medical requirements / health issues
Als je ziek wordt, kun je naar een wachtcentrale bellen. Deze bellen je binnen de 3 dagen terug om te melden wanneer de dokter jou kan zien in de dokterspraktijk. Bij zeer ernstige ziekte of ongelukken, kun je natuurlijk onmiddellijk naar de spoeddienst van een ziekenhuis gaan.
